Haha, thanks! I’m actually pretty liberal/libertarian. I like the whole spirit of freedom and opportunity here in America. And coincidentally I’m just on my way to go shooting to celebrate the 4th!
My outlook on life definitely has changed since moving here exactly 2 years ago. I’m still at least partially Swiss at heart, but I’d also definitely call where I life now home. It’s not too different, but different enough. I couldn’t put it in words tho. There definitely was a small culture shock at first, but I’d like to think I embrace a lot of American culture now (I mean the culture here is so vast and different, but in general). There are still some things that are new to me or surprise me ever once in a while, haha.
I’m super fascinated that you call me red-blooded American, and I feel it’s a compliment. But I wonder what made you say that?
Haha sorry, that was a lot more politics than I have ever talked about on here.
Fellow immigrant here. You know, I read a comment on Reddit once that I think really summarizes Americans for the most part and their attitude towards foreigners who move here. I don’t have it saved which is a fuckin’ tragedy right now, but it was something like:
“This is the awesome thing about America. In other countries, you’re always the outsider - you may be liked, you may be respected, but nobody sees you as part of their culture; you’re always the foreigner.
In America, nobody gives a shit. You move here, you embrace this country and consider yourself an american? Fuck, come over for a beer and some 4th of July fireworks. If you have a desire to be a part of the culture of this nation, that’s all you need.”
It’s been my experience, too. Of course it’s not the same for everyone, but I think that comment summarizes it pretty decently.
I agree! I’ve never been met with anything but kindness, patience and openness. (Well there are some assholes out there, but definitely nothing that I remember) A lot of people ask me where I’m from because of my accent or tell me they like my accent, and they’re always interested to hear my story and everything. Nobody ever questioned my American-ness or anything.
So yeh! Happy 4th to everybody, and happy 2-years-since-immigration-anniversary to me!
Or like some people like to say; America Fuck Yeah! (I still don’t agree with some American politics, but overall the country and everybody living in it is pretty awesome)
Sorry for all the text post spam!
